BeFootball Academy advances research into immersive football training

Two scientific research projects and a new line of study reinforce BeFootball Academy's commitment to developing innovative training methodologies powered by immersive technologies.
How will the football of the future be trained?
For decades, sports training has followed a well-established model: training grounds, gyms, tactical boards, and countless hours of repetition on the pitch.
Today, technological innovation is raising a new question for coaches, researchers, and athletes alike:
What if part of tomorrow's training took place before players even touched the ball?
At BeFootball Academy, we have been exploring that question through applied research projects designed to understand how immersive technologies can contribute to athletic performance and player development.

Applied research to better understand performance
Our research is built around a simple idea: modern football requires much more than physical preparation.
A player's ability to read the game, anticipate situations, and make decisions within milliseconds has become one of the key factors that separates good performance from elite performance.
With this objective, BeFootball Academy develops research focused on understanding how virtual reality, simulated environments, and other immersive technologies can complement traditional training methods.
Two scientific research projects underway
BeFootball Academy currently has two scientific studies awaiting publication, representing an important milestone in this line of research.
The first is a systematic review examining the use of virtual reality, 360° video, and simulated environments in football training.
The second is an intervention study conducted with youth goalkeepers, using a structured immersive training program to analyze multiple variables related to sports performance.
Together, these projects aim to provide scientific evidence supporting the potential of immersive technologies within player development and training programs.

Training decision-making
Beyond the specific findings of each study, one conclusion guides all of BeFootball Academy's research.
Modern football is no longer defined solely by physical speed.
It is equally shaped by how quickly a player can process information and make decisions.
Scanning the environment.
Anticipating movement.
Making decisions.
Adapting to constantly changing situations.
These cognitive skills are fundamental to athletic performance and can benefit from innovative training methodologies capable of recreating complex game scenarios within controlled immersive environments.
Evidence that drives further research
The goalkeeper intervention study provides original evidence showing how an immersive training program can improve reaction speed, accuracy, visuomotor discrimination, and error reduction within simulated environments.
The results also reveal changes in physiological markers associated with autonomic regulation, opening new research opportunities into the relationship between immersion, adaptation, and athletic performance.
These findings provide a strong foundation for expanding scientific knowledge on the application of immersive technologies in sports training.

A new research project with female goalkeepers
Research at BeFootball Academy continues to evolve.
A new intervention study is currently being conducted with youth female goalkeepers, incorporating tactical, psychological, psychophysiological, and academic variables to better understand how immersive technologies can contribute to the holistic development of athletes.
This new phase will broaden our understanding of how immersive training can impact different learning and performance environments.
